One thing that is often overlooked when planning and creating a beautiful summer garden for homeowners to enjoy is the fact that the garden exists throughout the year. Unfortunately in the vast majority of summer gardens there is a huge hole in the garden for the vast majority of the year. Carefully planning in order to avoid this process and planting flowering plants that bloom during various seasons of the year as well as plants that provide beautiful foliage and greenery even when the flowers may not be blooming can prevent this absence of life within your summer garden from occurring.

Plant continuously and groom your garden consistently throughout the year. Obviously the winter months are not great months for planting in the earth but this doesn’t mean that you cannot use flowerpots filled with seasonal offerings to fill the gaps of green within your garden. There are all kinds of flowers that thrive in winter weather that would make a beautiful addition to your winter garden without taking anything away from the beauty of your summer garden. In fact, the ability to incorporate these flowers and plants into your garden without necessarily planting may be an excellent incentive to keep your garden up to date even in seasons that aren’t traditionally thought of as gardening seasons.

Add features to your garden that aren’t plant related to bring splashes of color to your garden during winter months while preserving the space needed for planting your summer garden when the appropriate time comes. Flowerpots are a great example of this but so are lawn ornaments and statues that may be either moved to a different location during summer months or removed all together. Keep the earth warm for the summer garden to come during those long cold winter months.

Use the winter months to plan your summer garden. The spring is often spent in preparation and the fall months are spent harvesting. The winter months would be put to excellent use planning the new additions and possible movements that need to occur in the coming months. Working on your garden and improving your garden does not necessarily require working in your garden. Once you have those gaps filled in and a little bit of green and color in your garden for the winter months you can focus your undivided attention on making the coming summer garden even better and more spectacular than ever before.

Be careful not to plant all of your seeds in one garden spot so to speak while you are making your plans. By this I mean you need to keep a certain willingness to make adjustments and corrections as you go and learn more about the growing process and the specific gardening needs of your yard. Every growing season will bring a season of new lessons to learn take the time to reflect upon the lessons learned during previous seasons when making plans for the coming seasons and make the adjustments that present themselves along the way.

By learning from the mistakes of the past and always looking to and anticipating the needs of the future you are insuring greater success each year for your summer garden not only during the dog days of summer but throughout all the seasons of the year.

If you have the time and the inclination to create an organic summer garden there are few better ways to go when it comes to the potential impact on the planet. A summer garden is a thing of beauty to be enjoyed by all you invite into your garden. That being said, there are certain pests we’d all like to keep out of our gardens as well. The problem is that the pesticides of the past have undetermined side effects that have the potential to cause lasting harm. If we can avoid introducing those chemicals to our own gardens we are protecting our kids from dangers we may not even be aware of yet and protecting the other animals that may innocently come in contact with our gardens such as birds and butterflies from being harmed by the chemicals present in most common pesticides.

What does this mean to gardeners when it comes to efforts directed towards keeping out potential pests? Quite honestly, it means we are going to have to get a little bit creative in those efforts turning to natural solutions rather than chemicals. One way in which this can quite easily be accomplished is by encouraging animals that prey upon the pests to make your garden their home. Of course, this could potentially bring about its own set of problems but from a gardening perspective it is often very sound reasoning.

Use organic mulch. While this isn’t necessarily a means of pest control it is a wise move when it comes to organic gardening. Not only does the mulch provide the very useful mulching properties throughout the growing season but once the growing season has ended can be turned over and used in order to boost the organic material within the soil. This in turns provides nutrients that are important to keeping the soil fit for sustaining plant life in future growing seasons.

Attract birds to your garden. This has a two-fold benefit for the organic gardener. First of all the birds are often natural predators for many of the bugs that make a nuisance of themselves in the average summer garden. Second, birds leave behind their own little fertilizing additions to the landscape of your garden. Don’t you wish all solutions were this simple?

Keep your garden healthy, well fertilized, watered regularly and appropriately, and free of weeds. A good offense is the best defense. A good immune system and constant hand washing are the best defense the human body has against catching colds and viruses. The same holds true for gardens and their ability to fight pests. Keep your garden strong and healthy and it will repel many of the pests that may cripple other gardens on its own. It certainly doesn’t hurt anything to keep this philosophy in mind and you may be amazed at how well it works.

Organic gardening is more than a plan for your garden it is a return to the ways of old in the world of gardening. For centuries before pesticides were created man managed to live off the abundance of his gardens. It makes sense that by returning to those ideals we can also enjoy great food and a bountiful harvest in the modern world. Make the choice today to make your summer garden an organic garden and reap the benefit in better health and greater enjoyment of the gardening process.

Thinking of starting in gardening with apartment gardening? Well that’s a great way to start, if you have a moderate-size apartment where you can make use of vines, creepers and more to enhance the beauty. Even a small apartment can work wonders to give the plants a distinctiveness of their own. Never forget that the size of the place you live in does not really matter if you want to opt for a renovation.

And there is nothing better than changing the look of your home with pleasing plants. Before installing a garden in your apartment, make sure that you make a decent estimate of its location. It is even better if you have a moderately big patio or balcony where you can place potted plants. The space of your balcony can be used effectively as the plants will remain out of your way and they will receive adequate sunlight.

There are often many factors to consider before you give a serious thought to the option of an apartment garden. You have to see whether your apartment has the required space, moisture and light for the plants to survive. Assuming that your apartment gets very little light, what do you do with your plants? If you have very little light streaming in all through the day, you had better opt for plants like the Chinese evergreen plant that does best in low light. Before visiting the nursery nearest to your place, decide on whether your home gets partial sunlight or none at all. A briefing to the staff at the nursery will allow you to fetch plants perfect for your apartment.

A common feature in most apartments is the lack of humidity. Most plants cannot do without a minimum amount of humidity. In fact, plants, found most widely in tropical regions need a humidity level of nothing less than 90%. Other plants also require a minimum amount of 60% humidity and are more suitable to be placed within the confines of an apartment. But apartment gardening becomes easier with plants like cacti that require only about 20% humidity. Starting in gardening with your apartment is not very difficult if you are worried about the temperature factor since humidifiers and dehumidifiers can always be used.

While considering which plant to adorn your living area with or which plant to place in your patio, be more practical than sentimental. Choose hardy plants that undergo least weathering and need the least amount of care. Buy a lucky bamboo plant and see it thrive under any given condition.

But if it is uniqueness that you’re looking for, make sure you have the spirit of experimentation in you. You must have heard of or even seen palm trees. But did you know they can be perfect for the garden in your apartment? The Lady Palm can grow upto a height of around seven feet and can give you more fodder for conversation. The smaller Ponytail palm is also very interesting and can make for a wonderful soother for the eyes. If you keep all these important factors in mind, starting in gardening becomes a child’s play and apartment gardening a pleasure-filled exercise.

There are many things you can use to make a good compost humus (which is what the final product is called). There are also quite a few items that should never go into your compost bin. Listed below are many of the materials you should not try to compost and why it is not a good idea.

Ashes from charcoal should not be added to your compost, you can add very small amount of ashes from a fire that was made with untreated wood. It is not a good idea to add a lot though because it can change the composition and make it too alkaline.

Do not add any kind of droppings from an animal that is not a vegetarian. Animals that pass the compost inspection include horses, cows, rabbits, and goats. You can even add droppings from hamster or other indoor pets. But stay away from bird, dog, and cat droppings (including cat litter). They all can contain harmful organisms.

Any type of animal waste such as leftover meat, oil, bones, or fish waste are off-limits. They all can cause your pile to smell badly and can attract unwanted pests.

Milk, yogurt, cheese, or any other milk product should be added with caution. They all will attract animals and pests. If you do decide to add them, do so in small amounts and cover them with plenty of brown food afterwards.

You can add weeds, but you should take care to ensure your composting is functioning properly. If your compost is not generating enough heat the weeds will not be destroyed and can grow again once you spread your compost. You can dry your weeds on a sidewalk or on some concrete before added to the pile as an added precaution to make sure they do not survive.

Outdoor Patio Furniture bought online leaves you plenty of room to do some comparison shopping and matching for what you want for your patio. Just like buying outdoor garden furniture in a retail shop there are tactics you can use for your online garden furniture purchases. The seven steps to buying online garden furniture are tactics that will help you make decisions when selecting the stores to purchase your patio furniture.

Tactic #1 Hide the shipping charges:
Many retailers offer free shipping with any purchase you make on garden furniture. Others try to hide the fact that there is a shipping charge. Then others who claim no shipping charges just a small processing fee which can lead into a high cost. Watch out for any form of shipping charges.

Tactic #2 Using the word “discount”
The big word now a day is “discount” some websites use that word all through their advertisement to entice you to buy their products. When really, you are not receiving a discount by the time shipping and handling charges added into the product you could end up paying even more. When looking for garden furniture for your patio bewares of the word “discount.” Shop around find out if it really is a discount or just a lead word.

Tactic #3 Comparing to retail or list price
The website sells the same outdoor garden set for $100 more than their competitors do. It is their regular price, but they call it a sale! They show it next to a list price that is $100 more than that! Their price may not include shipping! When you see a sale price next to a retail price, does some comparing before you buy. The old saying “Let the buyer beware”, also applies to buying on line. That beautiful piece of garden furniture might become too costly.

Tactic #4 You get what you pay for
Many online retailers mark their products up high believing that you will not buy because the price is too cheap otherwise. This is a false belief as most get their products from the same manufacturer at the same price. Therefore, if you see a product at a much lower price considers buying.

Tactic #5 Claiming lowest prices
Many online retailers like to claim that they have the lowest prices for the same high quality merchandise that you receive from a high-end retailer. “No one” has the lowest prices…anyone who claims this is being dishonest. They are willing to beat the price of their competitor, but in the meantime, most of their prices are the same or higher than everyone else and you have to “catch them” to get “the lowest price”!

Tactic #6 Promising great customer service
Everyone in business will promote great customer service. We expect our service with respect and in a fast manner. Normally this is not a problem when you first buy a product it is when you need to return it or ask for a refund. That is actually when you need to know how well you are treated.

Tactic #7 Trying to convince you that higher prices are fair
Since no one can actually have, the lowest price advertising the higher price is fair is legitimate. The price might very well be reasonable if the shipping is included in the cost. Remember, the bottom line is not the price you paid, but the experience you got for the price you paid. Enjoy your online shopping for garden furniture good luck with all your buys now that you know how to be aware of online buying tactics.

There are some rules to learn and follow about what you can put into your compost bin in order to keep your pile healthy and working properly. The most widespread organic material that you will add to your compost will be kitchen scraps. The kitchen scraps are considered green food that you feed to your compost as they contain nitrogen – an essential element to the process.

It is a good idea to have a container with an airtight lid to store the food waste in your kitchen. You do not want to attract insects or pests inside your home nor do you want to be running to your compost bin every time you make a meal or snack. If your kitchen container is airtight you will also cut down on unpleasant odors.

Here is a list of the most commonly used compost items from the kitchen:

* Vegetable peels and seeds
* Fruit peels, cores, and seeds
* Coffee grounds – you can compost the paper filter too
* Tea bags or loose tea leaves
* Crushed egg shells – do not add left-over eggs cooked or raw
* Breads

You may be tempted to add other food scraps into the bin, but don’t. You should not add any animal meat or bones, oily products, or fish remains not only will they be sure to attract unwanted pests but they will make your compost smell badly. Whenever you are adding your green food to the compost bin, make sure you cover it under a thick layer of brown food (yard waste or other carbon producing agent such as dry leaves, wood chips, sawdust, or small twigs).

If your food scraps are very wet or moist, in addition to putting brown food on top of the scraps mix some in with the waste too. This will enable better air circulation.

Good gardening soil is the most important prerequisite to successful gardening. Remember, not any gardening soil can do for you to have the garden of your dreams! Before you venture into gardening, you have to keep certain primary things in mind. Grand expertise and professional training are things you can easily do without – your instincts and imaginations can make up for their lack. But the lack of a proper soil environment cannot be made up for by any other factor. So enquire well before you venture into having your own little garden and saving it from any potential soil hazard.

Remember, not all soils are suitable for all plants. Many plants, as most of us should be aware, are more responsive towards arid soils, whereas some are more responsive towards wetlands. Some plants detest too much sunlight whereas some need excessive exposure to sunlight, and so on. The choice of your garden plants, therefore, should depend on the climate of your country, and, most specifically, that of your area. You will get clearer and detailed information from a local professional about this and about specific plant species that are possibly suited for your garden area.

You can conduct local gardening soil tests to judge the properties of your garden soil. Simple garden soil tests will help you differentiate between conclude soils that are acidic and which are alkaline, soils that are sandy and that are not, fertile and infertile soils, and so on. You can conduct several tests on wet and dry soil samples and like that you can guarantee your plants a good gardening soil and ensure yourself the safety and health of your plants and flowers.

How do you know which is a good soil and which is not? The answer is already stated, but I raise this again because the issue may need some elaboration. All of us know how varied the landscape of the United States is. Right from the Rocky Mountains to the Central Lowlands, the United States of America exhibits a wide array of landscape features and this automatically contributes to the varied soil conditions. The variations in climate complement the process.

So understand the primary physical features of the region, where you are located. Study the plants and trees that are abundant in your region and test your soil accordingly. Any nursery or any other local professional can effectively help you judge what your plants need and what the most suitable conditions are. Seeking professional guidance is advisable though it may cost you a few bucks. But in the end, you will save you all the despair of seeing your adored plants and flowers shrinking to death.

If the possible revelation of your soil being unsuitable for the growth of your desired plant is enough anguishing for you – wait a second! Choosing the right variety of manure can make it up for you. It supplies the soil with the balanced proportion of chemicals, minerals and all other essential nutrients and can rejuvenate your entire gardening soil with newer life. A good gardening soil then can ensure a flowerbed that is always awake and shimmering with life.

Garden furniture made from wood seems to out last many other outdoor products. There is a large variety of out door woods that make Garden furniture. The favorites seem to be Red Wood, Oaks, Pine, Teak and Maple as these woods last for a very long time and maintain their beauty. The woods all have their own particular facets, which call for an individual to choose according to their own preference.

Oak Wood Garden Furniture chosen a lot for its durability and for the fact that Amish artisans make some of the most beautiful pieces that last forever. The Oak Wood noted for its beauty and its unique appearance makes the best in outdoor garden furniture. Each piece of Garden Furniture has its own distinct coloring. The finishes used by the Amish can help with the coloring, but they know that a clear finish is not acceptable, as it will change each piece color.

Red Wood Garden Furniture has a beautiful color and stands out in anyone’s patio. Chinese red wood also has its own unique qualities. The red wood or cherry wood natural beauty is in part due to the natural variations in wood grain and coloring. Variations in grain and color are expected, as each solid wood piece will have its unique characteristics. The beauty of your outdoor wood garden furniture is brought out in red woods.

Teak is a very precious wood and outdoor furnishings for your patio can be very expensive. The beauty and the durability makes teak wood a real collectors item when found. Teak furnishings often last over many centuries and known in the antique world as quite a find.

The most gracious of woods is the Maple, which comes from the Maple trees. This wood makes delicate furniture items that add beauty to your patio. Since the wood is very delicate, it advised that you use it only on a built in patio or deck. The beauty of Maple is unsurpassed but the nature of the wood is not useable in outdoor weather conditions.

Wood Garden Furniture is economical to use and that is why many people like using some sort of wood or another. The beauty that the wood generates for your garden and home makes having wood garden furniture a must. Some people have wrought iron pieces as well because they like to accent their patio and garden with both wood and wrought iron.

The artisans who make the furniture have a talent that is beyond compare and well worth the price of each piece for all their labor and artisanship. Preference to wood made by artisans is most likely for most people. Manufacturers do make replica’s that are exact to the craftsmen even though they are not of the same high quality they still represent good wood furniture for your patio. Many people who do not want to pay the high price charged by the artisans prefer to buy their wood garden set from stores like those that Target who get replica’s made by manufacturers in duplication of the real wood furniture.
